Uttarakhand Truly a Devbhoomi

If you regularly visit our forum you must have visited the link of religious places of Uttarakhand. In this very informative thread there is a thread where you can get the information of those places which were described in Ramayan or Mahabharat. For example

hanuman-chatti Hanuman Chatti

Hanuman Chatti (7200 feet) is a small hamlet a few miles from Gaurikund, the name "chatti" indicates that it was at one time a night stop on the pilgrim road.  Sanyasis from the Juna Akhara live there now during the pilgrim season, where they care for several small temples (the main one to Hanuman, shown here), where the passing pilgrims provide a steady stream of potential patrons (no one is here now because I took this photo in November).  The flat platform to the left of the temple is the samadhi shrine of Himalaya Giri, a sanyasi who must have lived in that spot for many seasons.  So at this site are two nodes of holiness for Hindus: a temple to a deity, and a memorial to a renunciant ascetic.

This is a frontal shot of the main temple, which even with the tower is only 6 feet high.  The corbelling (overlapping courses of stone) to create the arch is clearly visible, here, as are the painted signs  identifying the Juna Akhara (a particular group of sanyasas) and the place as Hanuman Chatti.  Enshrined in the temple is an image of Hanuman carrying the mountain, which is one of his central heroic acts in the Ramayana.  The reddish banners and the garlanded lion are also symbols of the Juna Akhara.

And

Lakha mandal, or Lakshmandal as it used to be known, is presumed to be the spot where the palace made of resinous timber was built by the Kauravas, who conspired to kill the Pandavas. ‘Lakh’ or ‘Lac’ is Hindi for Resin and ‘Mandal’ means region. While the Pandavas lived here, Bhima slayed two tyrannical chieftains of this region, and it was here that he married Hidimba, (sister of one of the tyrants) and fathered Ghatotkach.A tunnel leading from a ruined fortress to the riverbed, and mentioned in Walten’s Gazetteer of the Doon, is probably the one which the Pandavas took to escape from the palace on fire. On the Lakhamandal rock are inscribed the names of 9 rulers, of which 3 have been erased with time. The list includes two Chagleshs, one of whom built the Shiva temple at Lakhamandal. Here also, eleven generations of the Seoverman dynasty ruled. Divakarverman, the I 1 th ruler, was succeeded by his younger brother Bhaskerverman who married a commoner called Jayavali. Their daughter Ishwara, married Chandragupt, the son of the ruler of Jallandhar (Punjab). Widowed at an early age, Ishwara returned to her parental house in Lakhamandal, where she built a Shiva temple in memory of her husband. Inscribed on it is her prayer, that so long as the Earth, the Mountains, the Sea, the Moon, the Sun and the Stars exist, this temple built for the salvation of her husband’s soul would last.

There are many more such stories there. Please visit. Recently one cave is found near Uttarkashi which was believed to be of Mahabharat time. The news is.
